English and Maths GCSE student Shelley Darbyshire is supporting her three sons through their studies after taking up courses at the College.

Shelley, 38, from Ashton, took up adult learning in a bid to encourage sons Tom, Aaron and Frankie with their homework and it seems to be paying off, especially during lockdown.

“Now that I have an idea of what they are studying we can help each other,” said Shelley. If I am stuck on something Tom shows me how to work it out. I think he likes getting one up on me, but I am sure it’s helping him too.”

As we launch our Adult Guide for courses starting in September, Course Leader, Anne Frear, is encouraging people to sign up.

“We have all had a challenging time under lockdown, but as restrictions begin to lift getting back to learning, or taking up a new subject or interest could be a welcome boost.

Research suggests that learning something new improves mental health and wellbeing, developing confidence and a new lease of life for many.”

The College is offering new GCSE subjects in Art, Business, Sciences and Psychology, alongside their regular offer of Maths and English this year.

It’s also offering specific short courses, based at Leigh Adult Learning Centre, to get parents started with helping their primary school children with maths and English homework.

Anne Frear added: “Lockdown has been a real eyeopener for parents when it comes to home schooling. Many have struggled, so we are offering these courses to help parents, as we return to the new normal. And you may even be inspired to sign up for further courses, once you get back into learning.”

Those who don’t already have Maths or English GCSE can study for free, even if they have qualifications in other subjects.

Other courses on offer include Access to Higher Education Diplomas, as a route to university, in subjects ranging from Business, Computing and Health, to Teaching, Psychology and Science, Teaching Assistant courses and many more.

Many adults can study for free depending on circumstances.
