Students studying on degree level courses at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College celebrated their achievements at the annual Higher Education Graduation ceremony.

The event, held at All Saints Parish Church is always a special day in the College’s calendar and students who achieved diploma and degree level qualification in 2018 were invited with 291 students achieving their HE qualification.

Graduands received their cap and gowns at the College before the traditional procession up Market Street led by Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association Pipes and Drums.

Proud family members and friends eagerly awaited their arrival in a packed church. The joyful procession, not dampened by the bad weather, arrived along with College staff and governors.

Students studying on a wide range of Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and Top-up Degrees received their awards from Head of Higher Education, Dr Janet Thompson and Chairperson, Frank Costello.

Graduands were also addressed by former BA (Hons) Business Administration student Shauna Campbell, who achieved a First Class Honours Degree last year.

Shauna gave the Student Vote of Thanks and told the audience about overcoming obstacles and the rewards for perseverance and commitment to excellence as well as highlighting the importance of support from family.

The celebrations included the University Centre’s first cohort of BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Top-Up) and BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Top-Up) students.

College Principal, Anna Dawe said: “All our graduates’ hard work has been worthwhile. There are lots of opportunities in front of them and in the borough. The College has a strong history of providing high quality Higher Education qualifications.

“They deliver the academic knowledge and technical skills which set out firm foundations for successful careers.

“I’d like to congratulate every single student who has graduated and wish them a successful future. We hope they enjoyed their celebrations with friends and family.”
