As part of our commitment to providing high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) we provide experiences to support your daughter / son in achieving their dream career.

INDUSTRY & CAREERS PLACEMENTS

We provide guidance and activities to help your son / daughter succeed in finding placement opportunities. And we make sure the workplace is a safe environment to gain an insight into the world of work.

Careers Support

We offer our students a comprehensive programme of support to help them focus and achieve their career ambitions both inside and outside of the classroom.

Students are provided with a wide range of opportunities to meet employers in different forums, from employer talks, projects and real life briefs, visits to employer premises, master classes and careers fairs through to work related learning and work placement opportunities both in this country and abroad.Students are asked to reflect on these activities and consider how this is improving their employability skills through a termly tracker.

We have a dedicated team of qualified professionals in FAB futures who support students to build their skills to fulfil their ambitions and goals.

FOR MORE INFORMATION

We also offer access to an online support tool called Career Coach, this enables students to access and use up to date labour market information to conduct research and plan career and educational pathways. More information can be found below in our LMI feature.

The College is committed to achieving the GATSBY benchmarks for high quality careers education and is continuously striving to improve and develop the opportunities we provide to our students to ensure they have high aspirations that lead to meaningful destinations at the end of their time with us.

Using labour market information (LMI) to inform your choices

At Wigan & Leigh College we are committed to supporting parents, carers and professionals who are assisting young people to make informed choices about their next steps into a relevant course for their career aspiration.

By using the course related links below you can access a careers widget containing information about the sectors your young person is looking to develop a career in. LMI is a useful tool to help you understand what growth and opportunity is likely to look like in the coming years, as well as understand the salaries that can be achieved and the types of skills employers in these sectors will be looking for in the next generation of employees.

Our unique widget provides an initial overview of the workforce picture in the North West of England and appears when you click on the link for the subject area you are exploring – like the examples shown below. You can use the blue button in the bottom right hand corner to change this to a UK wide workforce picture.

You can also use the ‘visit careers coach’ feature to access our online careers support tool, with activity designed to help you both prepare for this next important step.

  • Not sure what to do next? Take one or more of the assessments in the system to help guide you to courses, jobs and careers that suit your skills or the skills you would like to develop further
  • Use the CV builder to help frame your CV so you can apply for apprenticeships or part time jobs to develop all round employability and help provide a bit of money and independence whilst you study
  • Research individual courses and jobs to find out if they really will suit you
  • Use the employment section to investigate the types of companies offering jobs at the moment and crucially the types of qualifications and personal qualities they are looking for.
