Is this course for me?

This Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care is for you if you are looking to start a career within animal care industries. There are a growing number of career opportunities within this sector such as; pet shops, animal boarding, animal sanctuaries, animal training, pet grooming, zoos and farm/wildlife parks to name a few! You will gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge that are important when you are working with animals, or progressing to further learning at Level 3 and beyond. Working with animals is extremely rewarding, but it can require long hours with dedication and enthusiasm to be successful.

What will I study?

This qualification covers the skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work in the animal care industries. You will study the following content: Maintaining animal health and welfare, animal feeding and accommodation, animal behaviour and handling, working in the animal care industry, health and safety, animal biology, animal grooming and care of exotic animals. There is also a mandatory requirement to complete 150 hours of work experience as part of your course.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of assessment methods as part of your level two qualification including; Written assignments, written exams and practical assessments. This qualification is graded Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction*

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 including maths or English and science.

What can I progress onto?

On successful completion of this course, you can progress onto the City and Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management or enter the world of work as a trainee animal care assistant, animal care worker, pet shop assistant or kennel/cattery worker. This qualification is supported by The Pet Industry Federation, The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums and The National Farmers Union.

Other Information

The College works in partnership with Rice Lane city farm and Greenslate Community Farm where we have access to a purpose built animal farms with a variety of animals including: rabbits, ducks, geese, peacocks, guinea pigs, pigs, goats and many more. The College also has purpose built exotic and small mammal facilities, dog grooming suites and kennels. If you are 16-18 years old, you may be eligible for our FREE bus pass.
