Is this course for me?

This qualification is for you if you are 16 years or older and want to work with animals, either directly hands-on or within wider allied services or businesses. . It is designed to provide you with a very wide range of specialist technical practical skills and detailed knowledge and understanding which will equip you to seek a diverse range of employment opportunities, or to further learning and training within the animal care and management industries.

What will I study?

This qualification gives you the opportunity to study a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge that build upon the core skills required to include how to: work safely around animals, be responsible for the planning and carrying out animal husbandry health and handling, and feeding and nutrition. You will also learn about animal behaviour, animal breeds and welfare and animal biology. As you progress onto the second year you will have the opportunity to specialise into a chosen area of interest Animal management or science. There is also a mandatory requirement to complete 150 hours of work experience as part of your course.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a variety of methods over the duration of the qualification including; Externally set assignments, exams, unit assignments, A portfolio of evidence and optional unit assessment as required. This qualification is graded using Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction*

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent, including English or maths and science

What can I progress onto?

This two-year qualification exposes you to the whole industry, and the opportunities within it. On completion, it is likely that you will enter the industry by working within an animal welfare organisation, a veterinary practice, a wildlife park or perhaps a business such as a pet store, feed company or dog grooming salon. You may also chose to progress onto Advanced apprenticeships or further learning within a Higher education institute to study courses such as: Animal Behaviour, Zoology, Animal Science and many more.

Other Information

The College works in partnership with Rice Lane city farm and Greenslate Community Farm where we have access to a purpose built animal farms with a variety of animals including: rabbits, ducks, geese, peacocks, guinea pigs, pigs, goats and many more. The College also has purpose built exotic and small mammal facilities, dog grooming suites and kennels. If you are 16-18 years old, you may be eligible for our FREE bus pass.
