Is this course for me?

Art & Design courses are taught by expert tutors with industry experience at the College's Centre for Excellence in Creative Arts, based in the School for the Arts. You will work on a wide range of projects, including live briefs set by external clients. You will also showcase your work to the public through exhibitions and competitions. This course provides an interesting and varied basic introduction to Art and Design. It will help you to develop your skills and confidence produce creative two and three-dimensional artworks. The main aim of this course is to develop both your art and wider skills such as employability and English and Maths, to enable you to progress to the next level course and in the longer term, gain future employment within the sector.

What will I study?

This course will introduce you to a variety of skills, including drawing, painting, graphics, ceramics, textiles, print and photography. Towards the end of your course you will be given the opportunity to choose your final project theme and the materials and techniques you would like to specialise in.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Coursework is project-based and is assessed throughout the course by your tutors. A range of assessment methods are used including external 'live' projects. You are required to evaluate your own coursework progress and in tutorials. You will not be required to sit an examination.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

Successful completion can lead to progression onto one of the Level 2 courses within the Creative and Perfroming Arts department.

Other Information

You will have a weekly tutorials alongside personal development sessions and functional skills to develop your confidence and study skills. You will receive tuition from experienced and friendly staff who will guide you in achieving your goals. You will also have the opportunity to go on project related trips, including visits to museums and galleries. If you are 16-18 years old, you may be eligible for our FREE bus pass. Artists create artistic works using appropriate techniques, materials and media; design artwork and illustrations; and restore damaged pieces of art.

Requirements: Level 4 NVQ; Intermediate, DipHE, DipFE
