If you want to specialise within this highly rewarding make up industry then this course is for you. The knowledge and skills included are highly commercial and taught to a professional level providing excellent employment opportunities. Our commercial salons are open to the public to ensure a realistic working environment this enables learners to develop skills necessary to work with confidence within such a diverse and exciting industry.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following:

Client care and communication in beauty related industries

Displaying stock and promoting sales in a salon

Monitoring and maintaining health and safety practice in the salon

Applying makeup

Also GCSE Maths and/or English if needed.

Camouflage makeup

Designing and applying face and body art

Fashion and photographic makeup

Media makeup

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through observation of practical skills and assignments covering the knowledge requirements.

You will be required to build a portfolio, show casing your practical skills and experiences gained on the course.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 or equivalent including maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

Progression pathway to employment within the cosmetic retailing industry or on to University to study Media make up

Other Information

Both Image Centres have state of the art facilities offering a realistic working environment. You will need to purchase a kit and Image Centre uniform. You will also have the opportunity to participate in trips, shows and competitions.

You will be required to do additional independent work from home to support your progression through the course.

Typical Tasks

  • Demonstrates, sells and recommends hair care products to clients and advises them on hair care.
  • Ensures hair products are stored and used appropriately and observes relevant health and safety factors.
  • Maintains client records and keeps up-to-date with new products, styles and techniques.
  • Collects payment, arranges appointments and cleans and tidies salon.
  • Shaves and trims beards and moustaches.
  • Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
  • Cuts and trims hair using scissors, clippers, razor and comb.
  • Washes, conditions, bleaches, tints or dyes hair and provides any necessary basic scalp treatments.
  • Discusses customer requirements, analyses hair condition and other relevant features to define and advise on hair style.
