This course is designed to provide a route to professional and management careers within the industry.

ALIGNED WITH INDUSTRY

Students will gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of the scientific, mathematical and design principles within Civil Engineering.

Courses are delivered by tutors with a range of specialist expertise from Chartered Engineering to Quantity Surveying, legal experts and site engineers from leading companies including Balfour Beatty, Mott McDonald and Highways England.

INDUSTRY STANDARD FACILITIES

Study in brand new industry standard facilities at the Centre for Advanced Technical Studies.

£118,000 investment in new surveying equipment, including a robotic station, 3D laser scanner and GPS surveyor equipment.

EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

As part of the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) we have access to a partner employer network exposing students to more employers through guest speakers, visits and competitions to enhance their employability opportunities.

Courses are delivered flexibly to fit in around your work or family commitments, with part-time day and evening options available and a September or January start.

What will I study?

HNC Modules include:

• Construction Design Project

• Civil Engineering Technology

• Principles of Structural Design

• Science and Materials

• Construction Environment

• Digital Applications for Construction Information

• Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out

• Mathematics for Construction

How long is the course?

One day per week for 2 years. Additional units can be taken to convert into a Higher National Diploma (HND)

How will I be assessed?

The programme is assessed through a variety of methods, such as written assignments and course work.

What qualifications do I need?

A relevant Level 3 Diploma.

Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered.

Students must also possess a Grade C/4 or above in Maths at GCSE or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

Progression Opportunities include:

Employment - In structural engineering, highways, land surveying, utilities and environmental management.

Higher or degree apprenticeships - This programme may be studied as part of a higher or degree apprenticeship.

HND - study for a further year to achieve an HND.

Full honours degrees - You could progress to the BSc (Hons) Construction Management or the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering delivered at UCLan.

Other Information

  • Organises and establishes control systems to monitor operational efficiency and performance of materials and systems.
  • Organises and plans projects, arranges work schedules, carries out inspection work and plans maintenance control.
  • Designs structures such as roads, dams, bridges, railways, hydraulic systems, sewerage systems, industrial and other buildings and plans the layout of tunnels, wells and construction shafts.
