Is this course for me?

Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. Electricians might work in both indoor and outdoor settings. Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as crime and fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies. They are able to work on their own proficiently and work without immediate supervision in the most efficient and economical manner. How will I be assessed?

All apprentices now complete an end-point assessment to complete their qualification. This is delivered by an independent end-point assessment organisation with no affiliation to the employer or training provider. This is a national requirement and endpoint assessments are carried out by a third party assessor. What qualifications do I need?

Employers are looking for apprentices who have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4. Level 2 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-3 or equivalent, including Maths or English. Level 3 - 6 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-4 or equivalent, including Maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

By the end of the apprenticeship the candidate will have satisfied the requirements for registration as Eng Tech by the Engineering Council.

Typical Tasks

  • Examines electrical plant or machinery, domestic appliances and other electrical assembly for faults using test equipment and replaces worn parts and faulty wiring.
  • Installs electrical plant, machinery and other electrical fixtures and appliances such as fuse boxes, generators, light sockets etc..
  • Assembles parts and sub-assemblies using hand tools and by brazing, riveting or welding.
  • Cuts, bends and installs electrical conduit.
  • Selects, cuts and lays wires and connects to sockets, plugs or terminals by crimping, soldering, brazing or bolting.
  • Examines drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams to determine the method and sequence of operations.
