Is this course for me?

If you are enthusiastic about fashion and its trends, then this course will enable you to acquire the skills and knowledge to pursue a career within the fashion industry either by progression to a Higher Education course or through employment as a junior fashion designer or pattern cutter. Leading fashion expert tutors from the Centre for Excellence at the School for the Arts will share their skills and experience with you. Our tutors have worked for national high street brands, from River Island to George and Florence and Fred (F&F). Many students have gone on to secure places at prestigious universities nationwide and into employment with leading fashion retailers.

What will I study?

You will develop essential fashion skills and knowledge, exploring design, pattern cutting and garment production. You will also enhance your drawing and visual skills, gain an insight into the history of fashion and research current trends. Visits to fashion museums, galleries and shows will form part of the course, alongside involvement in photo shoots and catwalk events. You will build a personal portfolio to enhance your employability and support progression towards prestigious university study.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

Your coursework is project-based and is internally assessed throughout the course by your tutors and will also be assessed by an external BTEC Verifier. A range of assessment methods are used including live and external projects. You are encouraged to evaluate your own progress throughout the programme.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English and an art related subject.

What can I progress onto?

You may secure a place on a university level course, or go directly into employment in the creative fashion industry. Previous students have progressed onto top universities across the UK including Glasgow, The Slade and London College of Fashion. Alumni have also progressed to employment with brands such as Primark, Halbro Sports and Zabou Clothing. Experienced Fashion Designers can expect to earn up to £40,000 a year, with senior designers earning around £80,000 a year. Fashion Retail Merchandisers can earn up to £40,000 and with large retail organisations can earn £60,000 a year or more.

You will be taught by experienced tutors who are also practising artists and designers. Opportunities for work experience, work related learning and guest speakers underpin the professional creative elements of the course.
