Is this course for me?

If you have a passion for practical outdoors lifestyles and love to learn about plants and how things grow, a Horticulture course could be for you. We focus on developing your skills and knowledge to gain employment in this expanding industry. You will learn about garden maintenance and design, plant propagation and sustainable horticulture.

What will I study?

Aimed to provide an exciting insight into this rewarding industry, students will study basic skills, health and safety and personal and social development. The horticulture skills will include tool maintenance, propagation, plant identification and garden maintenance.

How long is the course?

Full time for one year academic year.

How will I be assessed?

Continuous practical and written assessment.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 or equivalent. Or Achieved C&G L1 Practical Horticulture.

What can I progress onto?

Successful completion could lead to a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Land based studies Horticulture. Career Prospects include Head Gardener with salary earnings of up to £27-36k, Landscape Designer, Horticulture Manager, Groundwork Maintenance and Plant Production. Over 2,000 landscape gardeners are currently employed in the region.

  • Supports trees by staking and wiring.
  • Prunes and thins trees and shrubs.
  • Propagates plants by taking cuttings and by grafting and budding, applies weed-killer, fungicide and insecticide to control pests and diseases.

  • Mixes soil, composts, fertilisers and/or organic matter and spreads fertiliser and manure.

Gardeners and Landscape Gardeners

Gardeners and landscape gardeners cultivate flowers, trees, shrubs and other plants in public and private gardens, construct features to improve the appearance of existing terrain, and cut and lay turf.

  • Performs general garden maintenance.
  • Moves soil to alter surface contour of land using mechanical equipment and constructs paths, rockeries, ponds and other features.
