Is this course for me?

Aspiring hairdressers will gain the technical skills, professionalism and qualifications to establish a career in the industry.

This advanced course is designed to prepare you for a successful career as an employed and/or self-employed Hairdresser/Stylist. Based in our commercial salons, you will practise cutting, colouring, basic colour correction, and styling

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon

Colour hair to create a variety of looks

Cut women's hair to create a variety of looks

and dress hair using a variety of techniques

Promote and sell products and services to clients

Creative hairdressing design skills

As well as GCSE Maths/English if needed.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through observation of practical skills and assignments covering the knowledge requirements.

You will be required to build a portfolio, show casing your practical skills and experiences gained on the course.

What qualifications do I need?

You will need to have a Level 2 hairdressing qualification.

What can I progress onto?

Into employment: Career prospects include Salon owner, Industry sales rep, Assessor, Trainer, Employment on cruise ships In TV, film or theatre, Technical trainer for product manufacturers, Colour specialist, Teacher, Salon Manager.

Other Information

Both Image Centres have state of the art facilities offering a realistic working environment. You will need to purchase a kit and Image Centre uniform. You will also have the opportunity to participate in trips, shows and competitions.

Typical Tasks

  • Demonstrates, sells and recommends hair care products to clients and advises them on hair care.
  • Ensures hair products are stored and used appropriately and observes relevant health and safety factors.
  • Maintains client records and keeps up-to-date with new products, styles and techniques.
  • Collects payment, arranges appointments and cleans and tidies salon.
  • Shaves and trims beards and moustaches.
  • Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
  • Cuts and trims hair using scissors, clippers, razor and comb.
  • Washes, conditions, bleaches, tints or dyes hair and provides any necessary basic scalp treatments.
  • Discusses customer requirements, analyses hair condition and other relevant features to define and advise on hair style.
