Is this course for me?

If you love cars and enjoy fixing things, have you gained an apprenticeship with a company, this could be a great career for you. Motor vehicle technicians repair and service cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches. They work on all vehicle mechanics and electrics, from engines and exhaust systems to air-conditioning and security. You will need to be good at problem-solving and finding faults. You will also work with people and develop excellent customer service skills. These courses will provide you with the practical skills to begin a career as a trainee motor vehicle technician. If you want to qualify as a Light Vehicle Diagnostic and Repair Technician at Level 3 you will need a prior Level 2 motor vehicle qualification. This course provides the technical certificate needed for your advanced apprenticeship. It involves practical work on light vehicles, computer based learning activities and interesting lectures given by experienced motor vehicle staff.

What will I study?

The course has been developed to provide the necessary skill in motor vehicle repair as part of your apprenticeship scheme. You will gain experience in all aspects of motor vehicle repair. You will also be encouraged to develop your functional skills in Maths, English and ICT.

How long is the course?

This is a day release apprenticeship programme over a three year period.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is on going throughout the course and there are also end of module online tests for each unit. Assessments will also take place in the workplace with your work place assessor.

What qualifications do I need?

Successful completion of Level 2 in the subject plus GCSE maths or English at grade 4.

What can I progress onto?

The course is recognised as a national award and on achieving the qualification and End Point Assessment you will be a fully qualified apprentice in motor vehicle repair.

Other Information

Safety boots and overalls will be required for all practical activities.

Vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians accept calls for help and repair and service the mechanical parts and electrical/electronic circuitry and components of cars, lorries, buses, motorcycles and other motor vehicles, and repair and service auto air-conditioning systems.

Typical Tasks

  • Repairs and services air conditioning, heating and engine-cooling systems.
  • Installs additional electrical amenities such as radio/CD players, aerials.
  • Checks condition of electrical/electronic systems and carries out servicing tasks.
  • Diagnoses faults in electrical/electronic circuitry, removes faulty components and fits replacements.
  • Carries out routine maintenance checks on oil and air filters, brakes and other vehicle parts/systems.
  • Reassembles, tests, adjusts and tunes the appropriate parts, systems or entire engine.
  • Removes, dismantles, repairs and replaces defective parts and prepares new parts using appropriate tools.
  • Visually checks, test drives or uses test equipment to diagnose engine and mechanical faults.

Vehicle Body Builders and Repairers

Vehicle body builders and repairers construct and repair the bodies of road vehicles, and fit interior and exterior fittings to vehicle bodies.

Typical Tasks

  • Positions, secures and repairs external fittings including windows, doors, door handles, catches and roof attachments.
  • Installs and repairs interior fittings including seats, seatbelts and fascia in cars, sinks and special features in caravans and mobile shops.
  • Hammers out dents in bodywork, fills in small depressions or corroded areas in solder, plastic or other filler compound and replaces body panels using hand and power tools.
  • Repairs damage to chassis and engine mountings using hydraulic rams, jacks and jigs.
  • Selects, cuts, shapes and assembles materials to form parts of vehicle underframe, framework and body.
  • Diagnoses job requirements or ascertains work specifications from drawings or instructions.
