Is this course for me?

The course provides the opportunity to become a self-reflecting professional and progress within industry. You will develop analytical thinking skills and the principles of working in the public services to meet the demands of employers and enhance career prospects, or top-up to a full degree.

You will also have the opportunity to take up additional qualifications to enhance your employability through our Higher Education Development Programme.

ALIGNED WITH INDUSTRY

The Higher Education Development Programme has been developed in association with Greater Manchester Police - includes Stop and Search sessions.

Volunteering with professional organisations is actively encouraged. Notable organisations may include British Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance and Army Reserves.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT

As a HE student you may be eligible for additional qualifications which could include one or more of the following:

• Level 2 CCTV Operations

• Level 2 Bushcraft, Survival and Wilderness Living Skills

• Level 3 Close Protection in Private Security Industry

• Internal Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and First Aid qualification.

EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

• Duke of Edinburgh award and associated expeditions form part of course content you may take part in mountain biking, climbing and abseiling at home or abroad.

• Self-defence classes aimed at educating students on how to protect themselves and others using safe techniques. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to learn from an expert in the field.

• Students have benefited from overseas trips to France as part of their course.

What will I study?

HNC (Year 1) Mandatory modules include:

HND (Year 2) Mandatory modules include:

• Research Project (Pearson set)

• Reflective Professional Practice

• Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Health

• Serious and Organised Crime

• Offender Management*

• Expeditions Planning

• Crime and Substance Misuse

• Fitness Preparation and Testing

• Outdoor Skills Development

* Available subject to demand for those interested in Prison Service careers.

How long is the course?

Full time three days a week over two academic years.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a variety of methods including written reports, presentations, VLOG's/BLOGS and practical assessments for expedition and fitness units.

What qualifications do I need?

HNC: BTEC Level 3 in Public Services.

HND: A minimum of 80 UCAS points.

Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered. Students must also possess a grade 4 or above in English at GCSE or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

You may secure employment in the:

• police, fire, prison or ambulance services

• armed forces

• civil service

• local government

• public administration roles.

Following the HND, you may progress to top-up degrees in Criminology, Policing, Public Services, Fire and Rescue and many more.

Other Information

Social Services Managers and Directors

Social services managers and directors plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the resources and commission the services necessary to protect the welfare of certain groups within local authorities including children and young people, families under stress, people with disabilities, elderly people and people needing help as a result of illness.
