Is this course for me?

You will develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to build a successful career in the biological science sector. The HND includes a solid grounding in many areas of biology, from physiology, molecular biology and genetics, to microbiology, immunology, data analysis and practical work. This course offers a general overview of the biological sciences before deciding on your specialism.

Not only is this a great route for careers in science, but also from animal management, or health and social care subjects, towards veterinary medicine or scientific careers in the NHS.

ALIGNED WITH INDUSTRY

You will learn in an applied, vocational context, so you will gain theoretical and experimental knowledge and understanding, and will see how this relates to the workplace.

Tutors have extensive experience in a range of sectors, from Cancer Research to palaeontology.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT

You will develop problem solving, analytical and investigative transferable skills, to meet employer needs in a range of working environments.

You will have access to new laboratories, with specialist equipment for culture and genetics investigation.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Placement opportunities with Wigan Council working on ecological studies of the local flashes.

EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

More time spent on laboratory work than many other providers offer.

How long is the course?

Full time three days per week for two academic years.

How will I be assessed?

A varied approach to assessment that supports progression, through a variety of methods, from written assignments to coursework and practical investigations.

What qualifications do I need?

80 UCAS points in a relevant subject or equivalent work experience.

Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered.

Students must also possess a grade 4 or above in English and maths at GCSE or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

You may secure employment in:

• hospitals and private laboratories

• research

• drug registration

• patents

• the food industry

• and biotechnology.

Or you may wish to join the third year of an honours degree in a relevant science subject such as pharmacology, biology, genetics, biomedical science, biotechnology, ecology and conservation or go on to achieve professional awards offered by the Royal Society of Biology.

You will be taught by tutors with extensive experience in a range of sectors, from Cancer Research to palaeontology.

Course Fees

£7500.00

Course fees shown are per annum for University Centre courses. Courses lasting longer than one year, fees will be payable per year.
