Is this course for me?

This course has a global focus, and provides an in-depth understanding of the travel and tourism industry. The qualification forms the basis for careers in the hospitality, travel and tourism sector, particularly a management career. You may specialise in a range of areas, from visitor attractions and human resources, to hospitality and resort management or marketing.

ALIGNED WITH INDUSTRY

Tutors have extensive experience in industry, from hotel management, to working for leading airlines and tour companies, including Virgin, TUI and Easyjet.

INDUSTRY RELEVANT

Guest speakers include industry professionals, from hospitality consultants to local tourism entrepreneurs.

WORK EXPERIENCE

You will take part in a work experience placement relating to your preferred area of industry - from shadowing managers in hotels, events, or travel agencies.

EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Students have benefited from a European trip - subsidised by the University Centre - to find out more about the latest travel and tourism industry trends at first-hand.

What will I study?

Modules include:

• The Contemporary Travel and Tourism Industry

• Managing the Customer Experience

• Professional Identity and Practice

• The Travel and Tourism Business Toolkit

• Leadership and Management for Service Industries

• Research Project - Tourism Consumer Behaviour and Insight

Plus optional units from a range of topics including:

• management accounting

• marketing

• entrepreneurship and small business management

• airline and airport operations management

• corporate events management.

How long is the course?

Full-time for two days per week for two academic years.

How will I be assessed?

There is a varied approach to assessment that supports progression and is also relevant to the local economy, accommodating different learning styles.

What qualifications do I need?

80 UCAS points in a relevant subject or equivalent work experience.

Mature students with experience, a portfolio of work and employer references will be considered.

Students must also possess a grade 4 or above in English and maths at GCSE or equivalent.

What can I progress onto?

You may secure employment in managerial positions in the travel and tourism industry in the following sectors among others:

• Conference Centres

• Hotels

• Tourist Information Centres

• Visitor Attractions

• Travel Agencies.

You may wish to specialise join the third year of an honours degree in a relevant subject at a university of your choice.

You will be taught by a professional team of tutors who have extensive experience in industry, from hotel management, to working for leading airlines and tour companies, including Virgin, TUI and Easyjet, who will support you throughout your course.

Hotel and accommodation managers and proprietors plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the activities and resources of halls of residence, hotels, hostels, caravan sites, holiday camps, holiday flats and chalets, and organise the domestic, catering, and entertainment facilities on passenger ships.
