Wigan Public Sector Trainee Programme


Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Hospitals, North West Boroughs Health Care Partnership Foundation Trust and Wigan Council have been working in partnership with Wigan and Leigh College to provide an exclusive new programme for 16 to 24 year olds wishing to gain employment in the Public Sector.

How will the Public Sector Trainee Programme work?

The programme will be a combination of online learning, classroom based sessions and mentoring on placement.

What will I learn and will I gain any qualifications?

Whilst on placement you will gain invaluable experience of working for the Public Sector this may either be in administration or health and social care depending on placements available. You will also have the opportunity to gain the following qualifications:

  • Employability Skills – Level 1
  • Young Person’s Health Champion – Level 2
  • English and Maths Functional Skills up to Level 2
  • IDEA – Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award

When will the programme start and how long will the last?

The programme will run from the 16th September 2019 until March 2020 .

What days will I be required to attend?

You will attend college two days per week (Monday & Tuesday) and you will undertake a placement during this six month period, within your chosen organisation, for up to 14 weeks (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.) You must complete at least 100 hours within your placement to be considered for an apprenticeship.

Am I Eligible to apply to become a Public Sector Trainee?

Criteria required:

  • You must be aged 16 to 24.
  • You must work 16 hours or less; have little or no work experience and be focused on work or the prospect of it.
  • Qualifications are not required. You can apply if you possess qualifications that are no higher than Level 2.
  • You must be ready to work towards employment or an apprenticeship.
