Dr Sanjay Arya is the Medical Director & Caldicott Guardian of Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust. He plays a critical role in the performance of the organisation, providing leadership to the medical workforce, focussing on delivery of clinically safe and financially sustainable high quality services within the framework of robust clinical governance. He leads on the development of the Trust’s Clinical Services Strategy in collaboration with Internal and External stakeholders and has contributed towards shaping the strategic direction and vision of the Trust. He also works as a Consultant Cardiologist and is a member of various Cardiology committees in the North West of England and a member of the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cardiac Network. He was the Regional Chair, North West England AQ Heart Failure group and Regional Chair, Emergency & Acute Medicine, North West Sector Greater Manchester. Sanjay is also is a keen teacher and dedicated to teaching and training of junior doctors being the Foundation Programme Director for 7 years, the Examiner of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of Edge Hill University Medical School, Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Bolton and the newly established Bolton Medical school. He is currently working with Edge Hill University in recruiting doctors from overseas, helping them acquire new skills in the UK and facilitating their return to their home country and has written several publications and delivered talks throughout the country. In 2016, Sanjay was awarded Community Hero by the Prime Minister for developing cardiac services in Greater Manchester and was acknowledged as Covid Hero for his work in the Wigan borough during the recent Covid pandemic.
